Chintheche Inn - December 2011
|
Lake Fly Clouds at Chintheche During the month of December we have experienced the Lake fly phenomenon on Lake Malawi. Lake flies form large swarms of billions of small flies that resemble huge plumes of black smoke over the lake. The fly larvae live on the bottom of the lake, where they feed on aquatic vegetation. After feeding sufficiently, the correct weather conditions cause the larvae to pupate and float to the surface and hatch - forming these huge swarms.
The flies are an abundant food source for fish and bird life, which take full advantage and follow the swarms around. These swarms are quite beautiful when they are flying over the lake, but occasionally the wind blows the swarms inland. The flies can cause quite a mess as they get in everywhere and they have an unpleasant smell. The local communities, however, do have a use for the flies. Women from the local communities will catch the flies in large raffia baskets. The flies are then pressed together to resemble a burger patty and then deep fried. This is considered as a local delicacy.
